Three Teams at Saddleback College Earn Scholastic Awards

Mission Viejo, CA – The Saddleback College athletics department is proud to announce that three of its athletic teams from the 2008-09 calendar year will be recognized at the annual COA/CCCAA convention on Wednesday, March 31, in Ontario.  Both men’s and women’s swim teams and the women’s fastpitch softball team were selected as the top academic team in the state for their sports, Commission on Athletics Executive Director Carlyle Carter said.

The 13 members of the women’s swim team had an overall team GPA of 3.39 last spring while the 26 members of the men’s swim team posted an overall team GPA of 3.25.  One female swimmer and four male swimmers posted perfect 4.00 GPAs during their sport season.  The 12 members of the women’s fastpitch softball team had a combined team GPA of 3.12 with two of those students posting 4.00 GPAs.

“Congratulations to our men’s and women’s swim teams and our women’s softball team for their extraordinary academic accomplishments.  Their achievements are a testament to the superb coaching in and out of the classroom by our faculty and staff who lead our teams to victories while always fostering an environment in which scholarly performance is not only applauded, but required,” Saddleback College president Tod Burnett said.

The three teams will all be honored at the Student Athlete Awards Luncheon, which recognizes the state’s top scholar-athletes and teams.  Saddleback had five teams for the 2008-09 calendar year that were nominated to the Orange Empire Conference, as both the baseball team (3.02 GPA) and women’s tennis team (3.09 GPA) also qualified for nominations.

“We are incredibly proud of what our student-athletes have achieved in the classroom this past year,” Athletic Director Tony Lipold said.  “It speaks volumes about our coaches and instructors and the importance they place on academics.  Winning one of these awards in any given year is tough.  Winning three is unprecedented.”
