Irvine Valley's Scheevel, Cypress' May named co-MVP's of OEC
Kayla Scheevel and Madison May, a pair of outside hitters from the top two teams in conference, shared most valuable player honors and Monica Hayes-Trainer was selected as the coach of the year in the Orange Empire Conference.
Irvine Valley sophomore outside hitter Kayla Scheevel and Cypress sophomore outside hitter Madison May were named co-Most Valuable Players to highlight the all-Orange Empire Conference women's volleyball teams.
Riverside's Monica Hayes-Trainer was selected as coach of the year after helping guide the Tigers to a 16-8 record overall, including a 8-6 mark in conference play, as well as a trip to the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs.
Scheevel and May led their teams to the top two spots in the conference standings.
Scheevel was a key component in Irvine Valley winning its third conference title in a row. The Lasers ended with a record of 16-6 overall, were 12-2 in conference and made the playoffs.
She averaged 3.11 kills and 3.49 digs per set overall and 3.15 kills and 3.43 digs per set in conference for the Lasers. She ranked eighth in the conference in kills per set and seventh in digs per set. Scheevel also hit .302 in conference action.
Behind May, Cypress went 10-4 in conference and finished in second place. The Chargers had a record of 19-10 overall and also made the playoffs.
May was first overall in kills per set at 4.21 and total kills at 442 and ranked second during conference play in kills per set at 4.17 and total kills with 200. May also hit .304 during conference play.
May's kills ranked third for a single season in Cypress College history. She will transfer to Niagara University and play for the Purple Eagles next season.
Irvine Valley had three other first team all-conference players. They included sophomore setter Jenna Olbright, who led the conference in assists per set at 11.57, sophomore libero Emily Reinking, who was fourth in the conference in digs per set at 4.41, and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Matt, who averaged 2.70 kills per set in conference and ranked second in hitting percentage during conference at .351.
Cypress had two first teamers in freshman outside hitter Rockelle Gholson and freshman libero Emily Witz. Gholson finished second on her team in kills with 205 and second in total blocks with 60. She also ranked fourth in hitting percentage during conference action at .317. Witz led the Chargers in digs with 196 and digs per set at 2.51.
Fullerton, Golden West and Riverside each had two first-team players.
Golden West's representatives were freshman libero Kelsey Osgood and freshman opposite Cassidy Paperney.
Osgood was fifth in the conference in digs at 3.77 per set and Paperney was tops in kills during conference play at 4.53 per set and in hitting percentage at .365.
Fullerton's players were sophomore outside hitter Azucena Duarte and sophomore right side Alex Winfield.
Winfield was third during conference play in hitting percentage at .332 and averaged 2.91 kills per set. Duarte averaged 2.26 kills and 1.98 digs during conference play.
Riverside's recognized players on the first team were sophomore setter Melissa Moe and freshman outside hitter Lauren Wells. Wells averaged 3.15 kills and 2.89 digs per set in conference play, while Moe ranked second in the conference in assists at 9.47 per set.
Sophomore outside hitter Danyelle Brown was Orange Coast's player on the first team, Saddleback had sophomore outside hitter Kaylee Douglass and Santa Ana had sophomore outside hitter Chloe Anderson make the first-team list.
Brown led the conference in digs per set at 5.15 and was fourth in kills per set in conference at 3.60.
Anderson averaged 2.93 kills per set during conference and Douglass was fifth in kills during conference play at 3.49 per set.
