Orange Coast College Claims the 2011 Orange Empire Conference Championship

RIVERSIDE - Orange Coast College won the Orange Empire Conference Cross Country Championship meet, which was hosted by Riverside City College on the cross-country course at district’s Moreno Valley College campus. The hilly course, comprised of grass and dirt, proved to be to the liking of the Pirates.

Orange Coast - as expected - won the women's conference title as the Pirates placed four runners in the top four and its fifth-scoring runner in sixth place. Orange Coast finished with 16 points, a near perfect score for cross country. Fullerton was a surprise second-place finisher as the Hornets placed its five scoring runners in the top 22. Riverside, which had expected to challenge Orange Coast for the title, was third with 82 points.

Riverside’s top runner, NaKeya Alexander, who had been sick all week, finished a disappointing 16th. Jennifer Dixon, a sophomore, was Riverside’s top finisher as she finished seventh at 21:05. Teammate Lisbet Castaneda was ninth, but it was enough to offset Alexander’s finish and the strong running of Fullerton. The Hornets were led by Jacqueline Escobedo who was eighth (21:20), and Nicole Brennan who finished 12th at 21:35. Fullerton then got a strong grouping with runners finishing 18th, 19th and 23rd. After Alexander, Riverside¹s next highest finisher was 24th.

Finishing fourth was Saddleback with 103 points followed by Santa Ana (116), Santiago Canyon (149) and Golden West (185).

Orange Coast sophomore Meghan Foley was the meet's overall winner, finishing the hilly three-mile course in a time of 20 minutes and 14 seconds. She beat teammate Analicia Silva, a sophomore, to the finish line by 14 seconds.

The top five teams advanced to the Southern California Championship Meet, which will be held in Ontario next Friday.
