Cypress' Giajaida Vargas named MVP and Nancy Welliver named Coach of the Year

The 2010 all-Orange Empire Conference women's volleyball team was released this week with a repeat performance for the conference's Coach of the Year and Player of the Year from a year ago.

Sophomore setter Giajaida Vargas of Cypress College was named as the conference MVP for the second consecutive season after leading the Chargers to back-to-back conference titles. Vargas averaged 9.9 assists, 3.3 defensive digs, 0.5 blocks, and 0.4 service aces per game during conference matches and helped Cypress reach the state championship tournament where the Chargers finished in third place.

Cypress head coach Nancy Welliver was selected as the conference's Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Sophomore outside hitter Nicole Boyle and freshman middle blocker Kelsey Mersey also represented Cypress on the first-team all-conference.

Conference runner-up Fullerton College had three players named to the first-team all-conference list in setter Kristen Neary and hitters Morgan Hirzel and Jade Esquivel.

Orange Coast placed third in the conference and was represented by setter Kimya Jafroudi and hitter Cathleen Hopkins on the first-team all-conference while Irvine Valley was represented by setter Christie Allen and freshman defensive specialist Sarah Mendoza.

Riverside setter Brittney Diffine and outside hitter Megan Johnson made the first-team along with Golden West middle blocker Kattie Givens.

Making the second-team all-conference list were freshman hitter Stephanie Casillas and sophomore defensive specialist Madison Moss from Cypress along with hitter Jordan Harp and freshman libero Kristabelle Tamula of Fullerton. Orange Coast freshmen Katherine Wichner (outside hitter) and Maddie Baird (libero) made the list along with Irvine Valley sophomore outside hitters Hillary Crone and Lindsey Sappington.

Riverside's freshman middle blocker Jillian Paul and sophomore hitter Kara-Lei Cummings both made the second-team along with Golden West freshman Chaffee Sauni (outside hitter) and Saddleback sophomore Morgan Kavanaugh (middle blocker).
